The kingdom spoken of by the prophets of the Old Testament was the kingdom preached by Jesus Christ and the writers of the New Testament.
When I pray “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” I am praying for the rulership of Messiah from Jerusalem over the earth just like the first century Jews prayed for. I am not praying for some nebulous takeover of the seven spheres of this world.
The question is not the “what” of the kingdom but the “when” and the “how”.
Israel’s prosperity, growth, and peace in the land were conditional upon obedience. Her eventual restoration into the land (1948) and unto the Lord, are unconditional because the covenant is everlasting.
Genesis 17:8 “ And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
You CANNOT apply the curses to Israel literally and then spiritualize the blessings !
The kingdom was a familiar topic in first century Israel. John the Baptist and Jesus announced it without redefining it.
God always is King and has a kingdom as Creator but desires an earthly kingdom ruled by His Son.
|Isa 9:7 “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”|
The kingdom was among or in the midst of first century Israel in the Person of THE King.
The King’s first coming was in humiliation for the purpose of redemption.
The King’s second coming will be in glory to reign over mankind.
The original plans or designs of the kingdom have not changed.
Gentile believers are now grafted into the olive tree.
Romans 11:24 “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?”
Jerusalem will be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. Then the Jews will be restored and a Jew will rule from Jerusalem and there will never be another world power or ruler ! If this is not true, then why did the Apostles never correct this view ? After the ascension, the apostles never spoke of the kingdom of heaven as being at hand or near. It wasn’t until the Alexandrian and Augustinian warping of the true teachings of the Apostles that things changed.
The restoration of Israel in 1948 is a sign and a testimony. It was miraculous and preparatory.
The barren woman (Israel) will soon bring forth. Isaiah 54
The divorced woman (Israel) will be restored. Jeremiah 3
When the Son of man returns, He will come in glory with His angels and sit upon the throne of His glory and judge the nations. After this begins the times of restitution and refreshing, the regeneration and renewal of all things. The best is yet to come !!
